National Council Nomination

Six of the seven National Council members are continuing their election period of two years. There has been one nomination for the seventh National Council member, so a vote is not required.

Information about nomination:

Nomination: Elvira Dommisse PhD, BSc(Hons), Mus B, LTCL, AIRMTNZ
Nominated by: Steffan Browning
Seconded by: Holger Kahl

Elvira grew up in a family of growers. Her father was a gardener by trade (foreman of Parks and Reserves in Gore) and a grower in his spare time. He grew many different cultivars of apples, pears and other fruits, including heirloom ones. He also provided the family with vegetables all year round, using essentially organic methods. As a consequence Elvira, her mother and four sisters are still are very keen organic home gardeners.

Elvira's interest in growing lead to her doing an honours degree in botany at Otago University. Following the botany degree she was employed by DSIR/Crop & Food Research  from 1985-1993 and during part of this time she completed her PhD in the genetic engineering (GE) of onions. However, Elvira found the GE work unrewarding and could not see it being the answer to plant breeder's problems. She also had concerns about the lack of research on biosafety.  Now a music teacher/musician based in Christchurch, Elvira is involved in raising awareness of the risks and problems of GE crops in NZ and worldwide.
